Feeling sad and need to feel uplifted?
This was me these last couple of weeks.
It was then that I found out someone I loved passed away. It was unexpected and hit me pretty hard.
While I hadn’t seen this person in some years now, I couldn’t believe that they were gone.
But as we do, we continue to proceed with our lives. Because you have to.
This news came to me the day before we were leaving for a trip. I let myself be sad that night. I cried and replayed memories over and over in my head.
Of course I didn’t sleep much but I got up the next morning, put a smile on my face and focused my energy on enjoying this experience we were about to have.
I stayed in this mindset with a bit of heaviness in the background. Grief kind of lingers doesn’t it? It did so, until this past weekend when I was finally able to say goodbye.
Showing up at that memorial and expressing my gratefulness to her through prayer was truly what made it hit home.
I have been in this sort of cloud and have actively been making effort to uplift myself.
If you are feeling sad and feel as if a cloud is following you, I thought I would share some ways that can help in lifting your spirit.
There is always a light, we just have to look for it.
Ways To Lift Your Mood When You Are Sad
Do an activity
Sometimes a little distraction can help in shifting your feelings. Putting focus on something outside from what is going on inside can be extremely helpful in uplifting your mood. Maybe you have a feel-good hobby, like to write or want to finally get that closet organized, taking that time away from your thoughts and putting energy outward can serve you well.
Be around people who love and support you
When you are feeling sad having people you know, love and trust around is so important. Enjoy those people. Talk through your feelings and don’t be afraid to laugh with them.
Laughing can truly help in shifting those feelings and help lift you up.
Avoid stressful things
When we are down, stress can be a catalyst for further angst and pain. We have to take a step back from stressful things and allow ourselves to work through whatever may be bringing us down.
This is the perfect opportunity to delve deeper into some self-care.
If something causes stress for you, take a step back, breathe, figure out if it truly is something that needs to be handled right now and if not, remove yourself from the situation. If it is pertinent that it get done now, see if you can accept help from someone who can alleviate some of the stress. You may be able to approach the situation better.

Get out of the house
Getting fresh air, feeling the sun on your face and being outdoors is amazing medicine for the soul. Take a long walk. Go to someplace you find beautiful in nature and just BE in that space. Enjoy nature for how wonderful it is. Express some gratitude in it and reflect on it.
You will be amazed at how good you feel when you engage in the beauty that is around you.

Rest when you can. Don’t over exert yourself when you are feeling sad. Emotional stress can affect not only the spirit, it can affect the mind and the body.
Try to get a full nights sleep. If you feel anxious before bed, give yourself extra time to settle. Drink some tea, read a bit of a book that makes you smile, let yourself relax.
You will feel refreshed the next morning, a little stronger and more positive.
